Flower Farming - Winter Recap

Are you curious about what flower farmers do each season? I’ll be walking you through it this year.

Here’s the winter recap! During the winter months the hard labor jobs decrease, but the other tasks are ramped up. Early in the winter we were focused on evergreens and dried flowers. After that, I got caught up in the office and updated our website. Planning and scheduling are huge tasks this time of year. We planned out our seeding, transplanting, and task schedules. This makes the craziest of spring and summer a little less crazy.  I can do a quick scan on our calendar to know what needs to get done each week. Our overwintering flowers were transplanted last fall and I’ve been maintaining them all winter. I also had a chance to read a stack of books, which is my favorite winter activity.

The past couple of weeks we’ve been able to get lots of outdoor tasks done like bed prep, hoop house maintenance, and general cleaning. These tasks will continue as the weather allows. We’ve also been working on ordering tools and supplies needed for the year. More cool season flowers will get seeded and transplanted outside and in hoop houses in the coming weeks!

That’s winter for us in a nutshell! We are gearing up for spring and can’t wait to start harvesting flowers for you all!
